At Myren in Strömstad, Nordic SeaFarm is building a new hatchery for seaweed cultivation. Since 2016, the company has rented space from the University of Gothenburg at the Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, but is now building its own facility and has received co-financing from the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket).
The hatchery will make it possible to produce seeding material for several species and populations, supplying seaweed farmers along the entire west coast as well as in other countries. Initially, Nordic SeaFarm will be able to produce three times as much twine as today, while the water system will allow for significantly greater scaling in the future.
An even greater advantage of the new hatchery is that it will enable the production of large volumes of early life stages of seaweed from multiple species and populations for twine cultivation at other sites.
Nordic SeaFarm has unique knowledge and experience in cultivating early developmental stages of seaweed, and there is interest from other seaweed hatcheries in purchasing material to manage the twine cultivation themselves.
