A Swedish
seaweed company
Nordic SeaFarm is at forefront of democratizing seaweed by growing high value species at massive scale in the ocean. Research & development is in our DNA, and is why we have successfully completed multiple EU-research projects over the years and why we continuously break through with new innovative ways of farming seaweed at scale in the ocean. We exist to drive change and to create a regenerative and prosperous planet.
Today, Nordic SeaFarm is one of Europe's leading producers of sustainably farmed seaweed and works with a range of stakeholders to develop new products and services. We have control over the whole value chain, from spores to product, and only produce the highest quality product.
Seaweed exists in all kinds of products, from food and textiles to animal feed and biomaterials.
Our mission is to make seaweed truly available to the masses. Through large-scale farming we make seaweed widely available. Regardless of location, social or economical circumstances - our goal is to make seaweed products a part of everyday life.
R&D Projects
Our company is built on a foundation of science and research.
Read below of current local and EU Projects:
Blue Fields for a Green Future –
Seaweed as a source of sustainable foods (BLUEGREEN)
This Formas project explores the potential of the fast-growing seaweed species Ulva fenestrata as a new ecologically cultivated Swedish protein. BLUEGREEN will look into a combination of sea-based (non-fertilized) and short-term, post-harvest tank cultivation of Ulva. BLUEGREEN will investigate different post-harvest process methods to achieve biomass stability, but also to increase protein digestibility and to maintain or improve the sensorial profile.
SensAlg – A sensory knowledge base for increased consumption of Swedish macroalgae
With SensAlg, we aim to promote the consumption of domestically grown seaweed in Sweden by exploring the opportunities and challenges related to its sensory properties, including appearance, scent, taste, and texture. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Chalmers University of Technology, University of Gothenburg, Axfoundation, Nordic Seafarm, FiskIdag, and VegMe.
Horizon Europe Ocean Mission project LOCALITY
LOCALITY will develop new solutions to use nutrient-rich industrial wastewaters and Baltic and North Seas water to cultivate algae using infrastructures available locally and transform them into innovative products (aquafeed supplements, biostimulants/fertilizers, protein alternatives, nutraceuticals, textile additives).
HORIZON Europe project CIRCALGAE
This Horizon Europe project CIRCALGAE has a goal to develop sustainable algae-based biorefineries and products supporting the health of aquatic ecosystems for a healthy planet and people. It aims to valorize the massively produced, but at the same time under-exploited algal biomass into high value-added ingredients for the feed, food and cosmetic applications.
European Maritime and Fisheries Fund project ULVA FARM
Nordic Seafarm has developed an innovative cultivation method that finally solves large-scale production of high-quality sea lettuce at a low cost by growing sustainably directly in the sea. By developing strong cultivation methods, crops are able to cope with the challenges posed by the harsh marine environment and thereby the possibility of abandoning land-based cultivation in tanks.
